What Is Role-Based Access Control, Role Management?
Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) is a user access management strategy that groups user rights into roles within an application and across applications. RBAC simplifies the workload of user administrators and improves security within the organization by grouping together access functions that are required by users occupying a particular role in the organization, while excluding access functions that are not necessary for that role. For example:
- A trader at an investment bank has a role that requires them to create new transactions in the trading application; but they should not be able to approve new transactions
- An HR representative has a role that requires them to edit the personnel files and access the payroll system, but not to directly update the company’s General Ledger
